Obituary: James Burke

James “Jim” Burke, 69, a tankerman and tank barge firefighting instructor for The River School, died May 1. During his long career as a merchant mariner, Burke, who held an unlimited Chief Engineer license, sailed on both rivers and oceans. He traveled around the world seven times, helped build the “Chunnel” between England and France, worked on a fishing boat in Bering Sea, and worked in more than 32 countries around the world.
