PPG Unveils PPG Novaguard 810 And Sigmashield 880 For Marine Market
PPG, New Orleans, La., recently announced the U.S. and Canadian launch of PPG Novaguard 810 ER coating, which protects fuel tanks, ballast tanks and the internal and external superstructures of towboats and barges.
The company said the high-performance product’s one-coat, direct-to-metal formulation delivers fast application times and faster return to service after coating, with touch-ups possible using a thin-film epoxy.
“The commercial marine market in the United States and Canada continues to be very competitive, and owners are looking for products that can give them an edge as well as high performance,” said Al Kaminsky, PPG marine manager-protective and marine coatings. “PPG Novaguard 810 ER passes on the advantages of cost savings and high performance to customers, enabling them to work their assets harder while being assured of extended service life.”
PPG said its Novaguard 810 ER coating is a two-component, solvent-free, amine rapid-cured novolac epoxy coating. It offers a true high build, with edge retention and a smooth finish for easy cleaning and inspection.
The applicator-friendly coating allows single-coat coverage to a wet film thickness without curtaining, sagging or running. Its optically active pigment technology also enables non-destructive, ultraviolet light holiday detection, the company said.
PPG Sigmashield 880
In addition to PPG Novaguard 810 ER coating, PPG recently unveiled its PPG Sigmashield 880 high-performance coating for the offshore market in the U.S. and Canada. This multipurpose, surface-tolerant epoxy protects assets in extreme marine environments. The ultra-durable coating for vessels and rigs provides one-coat, direct-to-metal protection with quick curing at high moisture levels, including underwater.
PPG Sigmashield 880 offers abrasion, impact, seawater and corrosion resistance with improved cathodic disbondment protection and resistance to chemical splashes and spills, the company added. Its shorter dry-to-touch means assets can be returned to service more quickly, with the coating continuing to cure upon immersion in water.

PPG also announced the creation of a new marine sales team for the United States and Canada that will provide expertise and advice across the complete range of PPG marine coatings.
