Port Of Memphis Gets $1.7 Million Rail Grant

The Port of Memphis was awarded a $1.7 million grant from the state of Tennessee to improve rail connectivity at the port. The total cost of the expansion is estimated at $1.9 million.

The Competitive Rail Connectivity Grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation was announced January 16 by the Economic Development Growth Engine of Memphis and Shelby County.

Construction of the new rail infrastructure, scheduled to run from June 1 through July 30, will add 4,900 feet of new track and four new switches, and create space for 60 to 70 more rail cars to be handled at the terminal.

The improvements come as the Memphis Port Commission and terminal operator Watco are creating a long-range redevelopment plan for the terminal.
