Obituary: Charlie Newton

Charles “Charlie” Newton, 83, former owner of Economy Boat Store, died May 23 at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. A CPA, he began his career as an accountant with Scheffel & Company in Alton, Ill., and in 1967, he purchased and co-owned and operated Economy Boat Store, providing fuel and supplies to towboats on the Mississippi River at Wood River, Ill. He retired in 1999. Active in industry affairs, he served as president of the St. Louis Propeller Club and East Side Rivermen’s Association and is remembered for his sense of camaraderie and good fellowship. He served as a paratrooper with the U.S. Army.

A memorial service will be held June 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, Ill.
