Johnny Rozsypal Receives the Murden Lifetime Public Service Award at National Dredging Meeting Is Honored at Galveston Retirement

“The Dredging Contractors of America has presented the William R. Murden Lifetime Public Service Achievement Award for many years to an individual – usually from the Corps of Engineers – who over their career has made an outstanding contribution to the nation’s dredging and navigation program.

“The award is named the William R. Murden Award for a gentleman who had an extraordinary career with the Corps of Engineers much of it as chief of the Corps Dredging Division.

“Bill Murden demonstrated a tremendous commitment to dredging and consistently stressed the value of the Corps/Industry partnership in addressing U.S. dredging needs. He provided exemplary leadership to both the Corps family and industry by encouraging innovative research and new dredging techniques to improve efficiency and effectiveness in dredging operations.

“It is very fitting that this year’s Murden Award goes to an individual who has devoted much of his life to the successful management of navigation. His commitment to ensuring that the Corps of Engineers maintained consistent communication and technical and operational corroboration with the dredging industry has been exemplary.

“The Dredging Contractors of America is pleased to present the 2010 William R. Murden Lifetime Public Service Achievement Award to Johnny Rozsypal who retires from the Corps of Engineers Galveston District after a 36-year
career. Johnny’s focus during much of his career was the operations and maintenance program for navigation and flood risk management. He has served as Area Engineer of the Port Arthur Area Office and the Fort Point Area Office
Chief of the Navigation Branch and Chief of the Construction Branch in the Galveston District. Mr. Rozsypal will retire on June 1 as chief of the Operations Division for the Galveston District a position he has held since 2005 with responsibilities for managing the operations and maintenance programs for navigation and flood risk management for the district. This is no small task for the State of Texas has more than 1000 miles of deep draft and shallow channels that must be maintained. In addition this includes the operations and management of the Brazos River floodgates and Colorado River locks on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

“Mr. Rozsypal is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science degree. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas.

“So it is my honor to present this year’s William R. Murden award to a most distinguished professional who has given outstanding support to the world of dredging Mr. Johnny Rozsypal.”
