Van Winkle Named To Construction Board

In 2001 the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) named the Corps of Engineers as Dredger of the Year. Maj. Gen. Hans Van Winkle Deputy Commanding General for Civil Works of the Corps accepted the award from WEDA President Carol Sanders at the annual meeting in Houston.

Maj. Gen. Van Winkle retired from the Corps in 2003 and is again in the news. He has been named to the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board by President George W. Bush.

Created in 1973 the Board is the U.S. federal agency that develops minimum guidelines and requirements for standards issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Architectural Barriers Act develops accessibility guidelines for telecommunications equipment and customer premises equipment under the Telecommunications Act develops accessibility standards for electronic and information technology under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act provides technical assistance on those guidelines and standards and enforces the Architectural Barriers Act.

Van Winkle is the president of Hill International’s Project Management Group (Americas). He has more than 35 years of experience in engineering operations construction and project management.

Prior to joining Hill he was director of the Construction Industry Institute a non-profit consortium that is part of the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Engineering whose mission is to enhance the business effectiveness and sustainability of the construction process through research related initiatives and industry alliances.

His 30 years with the Corps of Engineers culminated with his serving as Deputy Commander of Civil Works from 2001 to 2003.

Van Winkle earned his B.S. in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and his M.P.P. in public policy from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia and a member of the National Academy of Construction.
