McNally Marine Using Liebherr Cranes in New Brunswick Port Development Project
McNally Marine is nearly finished a port expansion project at the Port of Belledune New Brunswick Canada on the Gulf of St. Lawrence south of the entrance to the Seaway. The company is using mechanical dredges for the dredging and excavators and clamshells to unload the scows.
The project includes installing a 400-meter dock to expand the Ro-Ro capacity of the Port of Belledune and deepening the inner and outer harbor navigation channels to 17 meters. Dredging amount was 200000 cubic yards of soft sediment.
The company used an 895 Liebherr crane equipped with a 16-cubic-yard Cable Arm bucket and a Liebherr 885 equipped with a 13-cubic-yard Cable Arm bucket for the dredging loading into scows that took the material to a shore-based rehandling station. There the material was loaded into rock trucks then taken to in-water sealed holding ponds. The material was unsuitable for ocean disposal.
McNally began mobilizing for the project in May 2010 bringing equipment from its facilities in New Brunswick Québec Nova Scotia and the Great Lakes. By the time of shutdown for cold weather the dredging was largely completed. At the beginning of March the area was in the middle of a six-week hiatus because of weather awaiting warm weather to complete the caissons for the sea wall of the dock.
