Dredged Material From The IWW Going to Bal Harbor Beach
Bakers Haulover, a part of the Intracoastal Waterway (IWW) in Florida, will be dredged by Cavache Inc. of Pompano Beach under a $1.6 million contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District. The Florida Inland Navigation District is a sponsor of the project.
The IWW is a federally authorized channel and requires dredging about every two years to retain a 10-foot depth and 125-foot width. Approximately 50,000 cubic yards of material will be removed and used for beach renourishment on Bal Harbor Beach.
Mobilization activities began in mid-November with the arrival of dredge Maya Caelyn and tugboats Stacey or Big John. Work began November 18 and should be completed in January.
Cavache will conduct seabird and turtle monitoring, as well as turbidity monitoring throughout construction.
