Great Lakes Dredging Team Hosts 2017 Webinar Meeting

The Great Lakes Dredging Team held its 2017 Fall Webinar Meeting on December 7, bringing together members from the Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo, Detroit and Chicago Districts, Great Lakes Commission, American Great Lakes Ports Association, Great Lakes port authorities and more.

The group is a partnership of federal and state agencies created to ensure that the dredging of the U.S. harbors and channels throughout the Great Lakes, connecting channels and tributaries is conducted in a timely and cost effective manner, while meeting environmental protection, restoration and enhancement goals.

Fernando Camargo of Hull & Associates Inc. gave a presentation on behalf of Joe Cappel of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority on innovative dredged material management, after the state of Ohio banned open-lake placement in Lake Erie by 2020. A pilot project is testing the use of dredged material for agricultural field improvements.

John Hull of Hull & Associates Inc. and Ted Smith of Marine Tech, LLC spoke on The Future of Dredged Material Management in the Great Lakes and the Partnerships It Requires. Marie Strum from the Corps of Engineers gave an update on Great Lake navigation, federal commercial, federal shallow draft and recreation harbor projects, current Corps funding and trends, and current dredging updates.

Other topics included legislative updates, a regional beneficial use manual, business meeting and committee reports.
