Humco Marine Products Inc., a St. Louis-based distributor of marine equipment and supplies, recently introduced a new item: a high intensity LED strobe rescue and safety light that is significantly more compact than previous versions.
The SM-3 provides 360-degree visibility for approximately 2 miles. This compact yet durable marker light facilitates rescue by automatically activating and beginning to strobe when in the water, working for over 40 hours at 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) or more than 24 hours at -1 degree C (30 degrees F).
Humco says it is perfect for commercial marine, petro-marine, cruisers, and any other application needing a reliable crew overboard marker light. Greg Crowe, a Humco sales representative, points out that the SM-3 floats upright in all conditions and meets all Coast Guard and Subchapter M requirements.
Previous versions of the light were bulkier and powered by a 6-volt battery but this version uses double-A lithium batteries. It comes equipped with a clip and would typically be used in conjunction with 90 feet of lifeline and a life ring in a bag on deck for easy access, said Crowe.
