McAlpine Locks And Dam Receives Awards From National Weather Service
The McAlpine Locks and Dam project was recognized with two awards presented by the National Weather Service during a recent ceremony held at the facility near Louisville, Ky.
“It’s an honor to be here today celebrating two important milestones: 75 continuous years of weather observations and over 100 years of hydrological observations,” said Waylon Humphrey, Louisville Engineer District Operations Division chief. “Both observations serve as key components to the engineering success on the Ohio River System. I want to thank the Louisville National Weather Service for not only presenting this recognition, but for their continued partnership as we work together to achieve our common goals.”
McAlpine Locks and Dam was awarded the “National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Honored Institution Award for 75 years of Weather Observations in cooperation with the National Weather Service” and the “World Meteorological Organization Award for more than 100 years of Hydrological Observations.”
John Gordon, chief meteorologist of the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Louisville, along with other NWS staff, presented the awards to Louisville District Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Guillermo Guandique and Humphrey.
“191 years of data at McAlpine,” Gordon said. “The folks here are easy to work with, show great attention to details, answer all our questions and are very accommodating. We are thankful for the good work that has been done by the Corps. We are very thankful to honor 191 years here.”
