Mississippi River Commission Sets Public Meeting Schedule

The Mississippi River Commission (MRC) has announced its schedule of public meetings aboard the mv. Mississippi during the commission’s low-water inspection trip.

The MRC is under new leadership, following the July 12 change of command ceremony when Brig. Gen. Kimberly Peeples took command of the Mississippi Valley Engineer Division. The Mississippi Valley Division commander is traditionally also the president of the MRC.

As commission president, Peeples’ duties include the recommendation of sustainable management and development of water related resources to the nation’s benefits via policy, flood control, navigation and environmental improvements along the Mississippi River.

Before assuming command of the Mississippi Valley Division, Peeples was commander of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division and was an active member of the MRC.

Public Meetings

The public meetings aboard the mv. Mississippi will begin August 15 in Burlington, Iowa, and conclude August 25 in Morgan City, La. All meetings will be open to the public.

In each meeting, Peeples will present a summary report on national and regional issues affecting the Corps’ and commission’s programs on the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

Local organizations and members of the public will have the opportunity to address the commission on any issue affecting the programs or projects of the commission and the Corps. Testimony for the record will be accepted until 5 p.m. on August 25.

Brig. Gen. Geoff Van Epps, MRC commissioner and commander of the Northwestern Engineer Division, will provide an update on the Missouri River Annual Operating Plan during the St. Louis public meeting.

The meeting schedule is as follows. All meetings will begin at 9 a.m.:

  • August 15—Burlington, Iowa, city landing
