Memphis Engineer District Awards Levee Contracts

The Memphis Engineer District announced three contract awards June 5.

Mississippi River Levees – System 6 Levee Gravel, Helena, Ark.—This $2.15 million project places gravel surfacing on the System 6 Levee, including all the Helena Improvement District levee and approximately 10 miles of the Cotton Belt Levee District No. 1 levee. Maintenance of the levee’s crown provides safe and reliable access for vehicles and monitoring levee conditions, which is especially important during flooding, the Memphis district said.

The project is funded through the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project, Mississippi River Levees Maintenance, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The contract was awarded to Tarpan Construction LLC, Cottonport, La.

Mississippi River Levees – Construction West Memphis, Ark., Re-Evaluation—This $1,049,900 project installs 18 relief wells and two permanent piezometers to remedy seepage issues on the mainline Mississippi River Levee (System 2 – Segment 17), West Memphis, Ark. Relief wells relieve seepage pressures on the land side of the levee, helping to prevent sand boils from occurring. The installation of relief wells helps to maintain the integrity of the levee during high water events and reduces the risk of a levee breach, the Memphis district said.

The project is funded through the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project, BBA-18 Long-term Supplemental Phase 2. The contract was awarded to Tarpan Construction LLC, Cottonport, La.

Mississippi River Levees – System 21 Levee Gravel, Cape Girardeau, Mo.—This $1.18 million project places gravel surfacing on the System 21 Levee in Cape Girardeau from Block Hole approximately 10 miles to BNSF Railroad.

The project is funded through the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project, Mississippi River Levees Maintenance, FY 19 Supplemental. The contract was awarded to Elite Diversified Construction Inc., Knoxville, Tenn.
