Ferry Limits Vehicle Size Due To Low Water
Low water on the Mississippi River means the Dorena-Hickman Ferry is temporarily excluding tractor-trailer rigs and vehicles pulling trailers until further notice.
The ferry, at Mile 922.0, connects Hickman, Ky., with Dorena, Mo.
Low water on the river has created an issue with the angle of the ferry landing ramp in Hickman Harbor and at the Missouri landing, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Some vehicles with trailers have been hanging on the ramp.
The gauge at Cairo, Ill., was reported at 18 feet on July 27 and expected to remain below that level for at least a week or until there is substantial rainfall upstream. The ferry expected to provide notice on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DorenaHickmanFerry when it can resume hauling tractor-trailers and vehicles with trailers.
Additionally, the ferry continues to temporarily operate on a limited, five-day schedule Thursdays through Mondays until the ferry can hire an additional pilot with a passenger-endorsed license. Motorists can check the ferry status by calling 731-693-0210 or going to the Facebook page.
