Obituary: Thomas W. Hines Jr.
Thomas W. Hines Jr., 78, of Phoenix, Ariz., died July 31 after a lengthy battle with a massive stroke and heart attack. He started working in the Hines engine repair shop while attending Western Kentucky University in 1964. While working in the Hines Towboat & Barge shop, he also worked on the mvs. Producers, Sally Ann, James R. Hines and Gene C. Hutchinson as a deckhand and engineer.
He served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne division in Vietnam.
During his years in Tucson, Ariz., he worked for Hughes Aerospace and Evergreen International as an aerospace engineer. During his retirement years, he enjoyed building a home on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his father, Judge Thomas W. Hines Sr., and mother, Sherry Hines of Bowling Green, Ky. Hines Inc. named two towboats to honor Judge Hines as one of the founders of the Hines Towboat & Barge Company in 1946. Judge Hines was an heir to his great uncle Capt. Richard T. Williams’ Bowling Green & Evansville Packet Company, which started in 1870.Â
