The Red River Valley Association, founded in 1925, promotes economic development along the Red River, which flows through portions of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. The Red, Atchafalaya and Mississippi rivers come close to meeting one another near Old River, located upriver from the Red River Landing and Tunica, Miss.

The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway is the commercially-navigable portion of the Red River that extends from the confluence of the Old and Red rivers northward to Shreveport, La. The 9-foot deep and 200-foot wide channel is 236 miles long and features five locks and dams.
