Vale Dredges Brazilian Paraopeba River
Brazilian miner and iron ore producer Vale began dredging at the Paraopeba River, the company said. It expects to finish dredging works by July 2020. Vale is removing waste it spilled during an iron ore dam waste burst in January 2019, which killed 270 people in Brumadinho. Dredging is needed to recover the river. Vale didn’t disclose how much waste it expects to remove, but it said there are between 300,000 to 350,000 cubic meters (392,385 to 398,924 cubic yards) of iron ore waste in the river. Dredging works will begin at the river’s Ferro-Carvão confluence with the Paraopeba River and then will continue for a further 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) extension.
