Ryba Marine Awarded Contract to Dredge Sandusky Harbor
Ryba Marine Construction Company of Cheboygan, Michigan, has been contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District to dredge the federal navigation channel and harbor areas in Sandusky Harbor. Sandusky Harbor is on Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio. The $1.364 million contract was awarded on June 10. Under this contract, approximately 324,000 cubic yards of material is to be dredged and placed in a government owned open-lake disposal area.
Sediment will be removed from the channel bottom by a mechanical dredge and placed into hoppers aboard scows for transport to a government owned, 2-square-mile, open-lake disposal area. Sediment in the Sandusky Harbor federal navigation channels consists primarily of silts and clays, with some fine sands and gravels.
The contractor expects to begin work in September 2019 with dredging to be performed in the Outer Bay channel, turning basin and upper portion of the Straight channel. The outer harbor has authorized depths of 25 feet in the Bay channel and 21 feet in the Straight channel. Sandusky harbor was last dredged in 2018, when approximately 330,000 cubic yards of material were removed. Maintenance dredging is also scheduled for 2020.
