On June 1, Campbell Transportation’s mv. Alice Jean was transiting northbound on the Ohio River. While passing below the Newell Highway Bridge, the captain, James Blake, noticed a woman who looked as if she was poised to jump the 70 feet from the bridge to the river.
Quickly recognizing the person’s potential distress, Blake alerted rescuers and stood by until help could arrive. However, while emergency services were en route, the woman jumped from the bridge.
Without hesitation, deckhands Travis Neely and Jared Starkey sprang into action. They quickly rescued the woman from the water and transported her to waiting EMS personnel.
On June 27, the commanding officer of Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh presented the United States Coast Guard Certificate of Merit to the Alice Jean’s crew.
The certificate concluded, “Captain Baker and the entire crew of the Alice Jean have gallantly supported the Coast Guard’s search and rescue mission. Their actions are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of public service.”
