Jan de Nul Launches Fourth Ultra-Low Emission Vessel

Jan De Nul Group has launched its fourth Ultra-Low Emission vessel, the 6,000-cubic-meter (7,848-cubic-yard) trailing suction hopper dredge, Sanderus. This green vessel is the first of two identical medium-sized hopper dredges under construction at Keppel Offshore &Marine’s shipyard in Singapore, fitted with a two-stage filtering technique for exhaust gases.

In total, Jan De Nul Group designed six Ultra-Low Emission vessels (ULEvs) for its fleet: five trailing suction hopper dredges and one offshore jack-up installation vessel, the Voltaire. The two 6,000-cubic-meter (7,848-cubic-yard) hoppers and the Voltaire are still under construction. Three 3,500-cubic-meter (4,578-cubic-yard) ULEvs, of which the first was launched in July 2018, left Keppel O&M’s shipyard in China on their maiden voyage to their first assignment.

The design of the Sanderus combines a shallow draught with high maneuverability suitable for working in confined areas.

The Sanderus is diesel-electric driven: all major drives (thrusters, dredge pump, jet pumps) are electrically driven and controlled by means of frequency converters. Each system can operate at its optimal speed and power. Power is generated by three diesel generator sets. A control system automatically starts and stops the sets depending on the power requirement. Asymmetric load sharing results in optimal load distribution over the diesel generator sets.

Jan De Nul Group designs its latest vessels to run on gasoil, but they are fitted with an advanced exhaust gas filtering system that uses a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This emission control technology makes these vessels compliant with the stricter European land and inland waterways emission regulations EURO STAGE V.
