OSIL Designs New Sediment Corer
Ocean Scientific International Ltd (OSIL) has released a new sediment corer, designed to be mounted to ROV and AUV skids. With the new corer, sediment samples can be collected and daisy chained together allowing multiple core assemblies to be installed as one system. The customers’ skid control unit powers and controls the assemblies, which have been pressure tested for use in depths up to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet). Each assembly recovers a 400-millimeter (15.7-inch) sample containing 300-millimeter (11.8-inch)sediment and 100-millimeter (3.9-inch) supernatant water. The core tubes seal after sampling. Each assembly weighs approximately 12 kilograms (26 pounds) and exerts a downward penetration force of up to about 15 kilogram (33 pounds), with the rate of penetration able to be adjusted for environmental conditions. Core tubes can be sampled directly or frozen for future sampling.
