EdgeTech’s 2016 Training Class
EDGETECH’S SONAR TRAINING TO BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER
EdgeTech will be holding its annual sonar training seminar from September 26 to 28 in New Bedford Massachusetts.
The three-day seminar uses both classroom and on-the-water training on topics such as sonar theory operational training system maintenance and post-processing data. The EdgeTech systems that will be covered include: 4125 and 4200 Side Scan Sonars 3100 Sub-bottom profiler 6205 Side Scan/Bathymetry system 2000 Series Combined Systems and Acoustic release systems.
With offices in both Massachusetts and Florida EdgeTech has been manufacturing underwater technology products since 1965.

Wärtsilä’s 34DF Engine
EPA AWARDS TIER III EMISSIONS COMPLIANCE CERTIFICATION TO WÄRTSILÄ 34DF ENGINES
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded its first Category 3 Tier III certificates of emissions compliance to technology group Wärtsilä Corporation for the Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engine family.
To comply with EPA emission standards for engines in gas mode operation the engine is equipped with a continuous nitrogen oxide measuring and monitoring system to verify emissions compliance within Nitrogen Oxide Emission Control areas (NECA). The Category 3 award is specifically for engines with a displacement per cylinder of more than 30 litres.
The engine also can be run using diesel fuel and is manufactured in configurations of 6 to 16 cylinders with a power range of 2880 to 8000kW.
The EPA certificates cover all 34DF engines built from now until the end of 2017.

KELLER TO BUILD THE INDUSTRY’S LARGEST CUTTER GEARBOX
C. u. W. Keller GmbH & Co. KG (KELLER) is designing and manufacturing gearboxes for DEME’s cutter suction dredge Spartacus.
The project includes the cutter gearbox two off propeller gearboxes three off dredge pump gearboxes and two off side winch gearboxes. The cutter gearbox will be the largest in the dredging industry. The cutter gearbox will be delivered by the end of 2017 while the other gearboxes will be supplied starting this summer and into next year.

TELEDYNE CARIS CONTRACTED BY THE SWEDISH MARITIME ADMINISTRATION
Teledyne CARIS has implemented its Hydrographic Production Database™ (HPD) for the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) production system.
The project provides for the management of SMA’s spatial data creation of paper and electronic charts special publications data services and other special requirements. SMA is responsible for pilotage icebreaking maritime traffic information search and rescue and hydrography in Swedish waters.
Teledyne Caris provided system customization and development existing data and product migration and training to SMA’s project team.

Damen Green Solutions and Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) have combined skill sets to help ship owners comply with new environmental regulations.
Last year the International Maritime Organization ratified the Ballast Water Management Convention mandating ballast water treatment. Damen Green Solutions assists ship owners in selecting the best treatment system for their needs from nearly 70 different manufacturers. Once a system is chosen DSC performs the project management and execution.

LM CRANES WINS CONTRACT FOR BUCKET WHEEL UNLOADER
PLM Cranes BV of the Netherlands won a contract to build a new bucket wheel unloader (BWU).
The new BWU has an unloading capacity of 2500 square meters per hour enabling it to unload an entire hopper to shore in just two hours.
The BWU is mounted on a custom-built rail undercarriage on IHC dredge and has a 10-meter (33 foot) wide bucket wheel that moves on a trolley over rails. It discharges onto a conveyor belt which is mounted to a 60 meter (197 feet) long crane.
DREDGE YARD’S NEW ECO200 NOW AVAILABLE
Dredge Yard has built and has in stock the ECO200 Dredge.
With an overall length of 16.2 meter (53 feet) 3 meter (9.9 foot) width and 1.2 meter (3.9 foot) depth the dredge is multi-use and can be equipped with cutter head plain suction dredge or auger head. With its smaller size the dredge can fit inside a standard container for transport and can be assembled onsite. It is designed for one operation.
The dredge has an underwater heavy duty dredge pump that provides a high ratio of mixture and increased slurry flow and allows for increased dredging depth. The pump is controlled by a hydraulic drive.

VAN OORD LAUNCHES ENERGY-EFFICIENT TRAILING SUCTION HOPPER VOX AMALIA
On March 30 Van Oord international dredging and marine company headquartered in the Netherlands announced the launch of its new trailing suction hopper dredge the Vox Amalia at the LaNaval shipyard in Bilbao Spain. This vessel is the first of two new midsize trailing suction hopper dredges for Van Oord. Its twin the Vox Alexia will be completed early in 2018. The two vessels are designed for capital dredging coastal works and dredging.
The vessels contribute to the modernization of Van Oord’s fleet and mark the start of a new generation of trailing suction hopper dredges which are in line with Van Oord’s stated sustainability goals. The focus is on energy efficiency to reduce the carbon footprint of its fleet and to build ships according to the latest technical specifications. Monitoring systems and special sensors give the crew insight into electrical usage and power in order to help them determine if they can reduce consumption.
Both dredges have a hopper volume of approximately 18000 cubic meters (23543 cubic yards) and are equipped with two suction pipes with submerged e-driven dredge pumps two shore discharge dredge pumps and six bottom doors. Each vessel is 158 meters (518 feet) by 36 meters (118 feet) and can accommodate 38 persons. The crane is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
ITALDRAGHE SPA DELIVERS MARINA MASTER 8000
Italdraghe SpA delivered the second Marina Master 8000 dredge to Fambridge Marina in Essex for new owners Yacht Havens Ltd. This is the third dredge of this kind to be supplied to a UK marina owner.
The self-propelled dredge features a horizontally-hinged dredging boom with a central hydraulically-controlled vertical hinge which allows the dredge to work under docks in place. It can maneuver into individual berths so just one or two docked boats needs to be moved out at a time.
Marina Master 8000 comes with a PD 180 dredging pump. It was built at the Italdraghe shipyard on the Italian Adriatic Coast.

This year’s seminar features workshops lectures and on-site hands-on experiences with the goal of giving students a full understanding of the requirements for a dredging project from contracting to completion. Topics for this year’s seminar include an overview of the dredging market project phasing types of dredging equipment dredging reclamation techniques site and soil investigations project costing and contracts. The site visit will be to Van Oord’s dredging yard at Moerdijk.

The Chinese company supplies shipbuilding parts to dredging companies for dredging land reclamation offshore projects marine mechanical engineering and green remediation projects. A sample of its products include bottom doors overflows spuds anchor windlasses and chains manholes suction pipes and bearing parts.
Since the beginning of the year UniSite Group has participated in projects in Singapore Australia Pakistan and the United States. Projects have included land reclamation subsurface exploration and capital projects.

BRISTOL PORT COMPANY GETS NEW SHOALBUSTER WORKBOAT
Damen Shipyard has delivered a new 23-meter (75-foot) long Shoalbuster 2308S work boat to the Bristol Port Company.
Officially named Graham Robertson the vessel will be used for plough dredging as well as buoy maintenance installation and repair work towing piloting and dredging.
The vessel arrived with customized options of a dismountable pilotage platform firefighting equipment and a towing hook to increase its versatility.
The Shoalbuster has a beam of 8 meters (25 feet) depth of nearly 3 meters (9.8 feet) a 5.3 ton crane and can attain speeds of 10.5 knots.
This is the first contract between Damen and Bristol Port Company.

Following the ceremony Victor Vovk head of Rosmorrechflot signed a contract with the heads of SSC and RechVodPut and a key specialist of the shipyard.
The goal of the seminar was to provide insight into the dredging industry and encourage contractors and others to enter the field of dredging.
Constructed for Gippsland Ports of Victoria Australia the dredge will be used to maintain navigation channels to the port of Lakes Entrance and Gippsland Lakes system both of which are used by recreational fishing and supply vessels.
After final commissioning at the Damen yard the dredge will sail to Shanghai for sea trials and then will sail on to Australia on her own keel for delivery in August.
