WÄRTSILÄ INTRODUCES FIRST HYBRID POWER MODULE
Wärtsilä HY Mechanic
Wärtsilä has introduced the marine sector’s first hybrid power module that combines engines an energy storage system and power electronics with a newly developed energy management system (EMS).
The Wärtsilä HY hybrid propulsion system is expected to become the norm for ships over the next decade lowering fuel consumption reducing emissions and improving vessel performance. The new system has a “Green Mode” to reach zero emissions and smokeless operation is also possible with a patent pending automation procedure. In addition fewer engine operating hours lower the need for maintenance.
Lloyds Register a maritime classification society has issued an Approval in Principle certificate to the power module based on technical material and safety analyses in normal operation.
The Wärtsilä HY will be available first for tugs and medium sized ferries but the company plans to design for other types of vessels in the coming years. The equipment was officially launched during the Nor-Shipping conference in Oslo Norway.
