LA QUINTA DREDGING COMPLETED

The Port of Corpus Christi said February 10 that it is ready to welcome new business following the completion of its $74 million La Quinta Channel dredging project.

In November 2011 contractor King Fisher Marine Service began extending the channel by about 1.4 miles to a depth of 39 feet using a pipeline dredge that was connected to the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay near Portland to the main ship channel. Costs for the projects were shared between the port and the federal government.

Lecon was responsible for constructing the ecosystem restoration system to protect endangered species and wetlands and seagrass.

On February 6 the port celebrated with the Galveston Engineers District and other local leaders the completion of the strategic initiative.

“As we continue to develop strategic business partnerships with companies from around the world the completion of the dredging of the La Quinta Channel extension marks a step forward in providing the infrastructure needed to support the port’s diversification of cargo efforts” said Judy Hawley chairwoman of the Port of Corpus Christi Commission.
