Rohr Delivers Clamshell Dredge
The Rohr division of Rohr-Idreco Dredge Systems announced the delivery of a floating gantry eight-cubic-meter (about 10.5-cubicyard) clamshell dredge in August to a client in France.
The dredge will replace an old six-cubicmeter (about 7.8-cubic-yard) clamshell dredge.
The new dredge will increase the digging depth and production at the sand and gravel operation. The facility sells the material mixture it dredges to the construction industry for making cement and asphalt materials.
The dredge includes an on-board fine sand recovery system a screen and cyclone system used to separate out the fine sand gradations.
Heiko Osterchrist of Rohr-Idreco said the cyclone removes the unwanted fine materials which are put back into the lake. The captured fines are dropped onto the high frequency sand dewatering screen where intense vibrating forces dewater and then convey the recovered material. Any underflow from the screen is recirculated to the hydro cyclone to eliminate the loss of recoverable fine materials. Osterchrist said this provides the user with precise sizing control and purity to meet the many gradations produced by the sand and gravel industry.
Boskalis Awarded Room for River Contract
In July the Dutch Department of Public Works and the province of Overijssel the Netherlands awarded the contract for the Ijsseldelta polder to Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V.
The project is part of the national Room for the River program which includes more than 30 measures aimed at providing better flood protection for areas close to the country’s rivers.
The work includes lowering the summer bed of the Lower Ijssel river along a 7.5-kilometer (about 4.7-mile) section near the town of Kampen creating a bypass to the south of the town.
The work will be executed in conjunction with Van Hattum and Blankevoort in the Isala Delta construction consortium. Initial preparations will take place in the fall of 2014 with the project scheduled for completion by the end of 2019. The contract represents a value of around EUR 127 million (about $163 million) of which Boskalis’ share is 50 percent.
Boskalis is already involved in the Room for River project working on the Veessen-Wapenveld high water channel the Lower Rhine project the Deventer project where a total of six secondary channels of the Ijssel river are being dug and the Noordwaard project near the town of Gorinchem.
Great Lakes to Dredge in Bahrain
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. won an approximately $35 million contract from the Ministry of Works in Bahrain. The contract incudes phase one and two of a development project within Hidd Port.
Great Lakes will dredge 5.8 million cubic meters (about 7.59 million cubic yards) to build a 156-acre footprint on which a factory will be built.
Great Lakes said it has worked closely with both the government and investors on projects over the last 15 years in Bahrain.
The land reclamation project will use three hopper dredges and one hydraulic dredge. Phase one has a target completion date of late fall 2014 and phase two will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2015.
DEME Dredges in Russia
Mordraga LLC the Russian branch of DEME started dredging in the Gulf of Ob in Siberia Russia.
The dredging is part of a larger project to facilitate the maritime transport of liquid gas from the Yamal Peninsula.
DEME said it is committed to a strict environmental management plan (EMP) monitored and implemented by consultant ECOREM NV. At the end of September the independent expert will present a detailed report on the scientific execution of the project.
“We worked hard on the EMP to execute the dredging works in Siberia in a sustainable and sound way” Marc Huygens DEME’s environmental and sustainability manager said “but we are of course willing to adjust our plan. Local conditions or operational insights require as with other projects a continuous flexibility and adjustment.
Australian Lake Gets Deepening and Beach Renourishment
In July the Port Macquarie-Hasting Council began a dredging project at Lake Cathie in New South Wales Austrailia to deepen the lake and enhance the sand dunes south of the lake.
Director of Development and Environment Matt Rogers said the project will dredge sand from the lake and pump the material via a pipeline to the beach where the material would be used to replenish the beach in front of Illaroo Road. The contractor launched the dredge from a boat ramps on the western side of Ocean Drive.
The $297345 contract is expected to be complete by mid-September. The project is jointly funded through the NSW state government’s Rescuing our Waterways program and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
Dredging in Thailand Will Prevent Flooding
Work is underway in Songkhla Province in Thailand to dredge drains in the city that are the main way to funnel water from the city into Songkhla Lake. After dredging water will flow from the city into the lake faster lessening the annual flood problem in the Tao-it neighborhood.
A backhoe dredge and truck are removing mud and weed and are cleaning all 192 water drains throughout the city. The dredging started August 10 and will continue through September 28.
