Van Oord Starts More Dredging in Indonesia

Van Oord was award a EUR 20 million ($27.2 million) contract for building land at the port in Surabaya Indonesia. The public-private project partnership includes the port authority and the new land will house an industrial estate.

The contract was signed on board the trailing suction hopper dredge HAM 310 at the Port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta in the presence of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and other dignitaries. Prime Minister Rutte was leading a trade mission to Indonesia that was intended to boost cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands in the field of marine contracting.

“Indonesia faces big marine engineering challenges. The broad experience of Dutch engineers in protecting low-lying areas and the construction of land makes good cooperation possible” CEO Pieter van Oord said.

Work started in December 2013 and will continue
until spring 2014. The project will dredge four million cubic meters (about five million cubic yards) of sand from the sea bed and use it to construct islands with a total area of 220 hectares (545 acres). The contract also includes the installation of rock.

Van Oord has several projects underway in Indonesia. Earlier this year in Jakarta Tanjung Priok Van Oord began constructing a large container port and the installation of a polder island that is intended for the expansion of the city of Jakarta in connection with the Kapuk Naga Indah development plan. On Sumatra Van Oord is maintaining the access channel to the Port of Benghkulu.
