T&T Salvage Responds to Kiel Canal Disaster

After a cargo ship and an LPG carrier collided in a canal in Germany T&T Salvage a division of US-based Techman Group assisted in the vessel recovery.

A general cargo ship laden with approximately 3700 metric tons of urea collided with an LPG carrier during adverse weather in the Kiel Canal near Brunsbüttel Germany on October 28 2013. The vessel was pushed into the embankment resulting in the closure of the busy Kiel Canal.

T&T Salvage mobilized personnel out of Germany and Holland to team with local contractors Bugsier Reederae and Schramm Group. With tugs and emergency pumping equipment on-site the vessel was held along the embankment and stabilized and secured utilizing a hold back system to the shore before the Kiel Canal was reopened to traffic allowing cargo removal and dewatering operations to commence.

The vessel was successfully righted on November 6 without the assistance of any external floating cranes and was safely towed to the South Quay at Brunsbüttel for inspection and temporary repairs.
