Kongsberg Maps Lithuanian Harbor

The Lithuanian Coastal Research and Planning Institute (CORPI) completed the first-ever 100 percent coverage survey of Klaipeda Harbour in Lithuania using Kongsberg’s Geo-Acoustics GeoSwath Plus COMPACT system. CORPI’s main activity is research for sustainable coastal zone management.

For this project the Institute used the modern multipurpose motorboat Emma from Emma Technologies GmbH specially developed for shallow water seafl oor mapping. The boat has an ad-hoc moon pool designed to accommodate the wide-swath bathymetry system.

The project mapped contaminated sediments in the port development area. For future development this dynamic environment needs to be mapped. CORPI’s staff had full-scale shallow water multi-beam side-scan sea fl oor imagery and seismic mapping to help them fully understand the shape and distribution of seabed sediments.

The European Union-funded project was carried out as part of the Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments (SMOCS) Project developed under the framework of the Baltic Sea Region Program of 2007-2013.
