WEDA Hosts Annual Meeting in Hawaii
The 33rd Western Dredging Association (WEDA) and the 44th Texas A&M annual dredging conference will take place August 25 to 28 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu Hawaii.
Sunday’s events include an all-day sightseeing tour the 21st annual George Watts Open Golf Tournament and an ice breaker in the evening. On Monday the opening ceremonies start at 8 a.m. with technical sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m. and running throughout the day. The board of directors meeting and dinner will also be on Monday. The technical presentations continue all day on Tuesday with the award ceremony dinner and dance that evening. Sessions run on Wednesday through 12 p.m. followed by the closing ceremonies and best paper award.

President Nadia Lombardero and Technology and Communications Manager Christine Smith will attend from Anamar Environmental Consulting Inc. The company specializes in environmental sampling and monitoring project design and management data review and interpretation and report preparation. Anamar recently performed sediment and water sampling for the Charleston Harbor deepening (Port 45) project and the Port Canaveral Deepening and Expansion project. It is also involved in work on the West Coast and Pacifi c regions including monitoring of the South Oahu and Hilo Ocean Dredge Material Disposal Sites (ODMDS) and monitoring several disposal sites off the coasts of California and Oregon. The monitoring consists of sediment and benthic sampling sediment profile imaging and multibeam sidescan and subbottom surveys.

Higgs Hydrographic Tek #400
Michael Higgs of Higgs Hydrographic Tek will display a new suction cutter dredge 3D digging product. The DigPilot excavator system uses wireless sensors on an excavator for land construction projects. Higgs will also feature the Altus GPS a heading system for dredging with a 10-centember accuracy using the subscription service Terrstar D. Higgs said many European dredge customers have been using this system but it is relatively unknown in the U.S. market. Higgs will also feature the Unabara single beam sonar and Bar Check/ SVP profiler the Hydrobook a sonar with all the electronics in the below surface unit and the Hydrobar an SVP profiler barcheck device which can produced automatic barcheck readings that can be logged and recorded later for documentation.
CSA Diver Chip Baumberger operates the Shark Navigator a diver-operated mapping system with GPS positioning.
CSA Ocean Services # 204
Bo Douglas project scientist will describe the CSA Ocean Services marine science consulting environmental monitoring remediation surveying and permitting functions. Douglas will feature the Shark Navigator a diver-operated system that tracks and monitors pinpointed locations on the bottom to be used with the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock project at the port of Miami. CSA will be underwater surveying relocating corals transplanting seagrass and monitoring during dredging operations at Miami.

Harry Steves and Darrell Nicholas consulting engineers will represent Cable Arm. Nicholas has performed engineering and provided project management services to support more than $1 billion of sediment remediation dredging projects more than two million cubic yards of contaminated sediment. Steves will display new and old Cable Arm systems including new product CALC (Cable Arm Line Counter) a stand-alone bucket depth system for bucket dredges. Ray Bergeron of Cable Arm said to improve performance on its ClamVision Position Software both the excavator cranes and hydraulic dredge systems will have new displays and capabilities.
Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science TAMUCC #104
James Rizzo assistant director for operations will represent the Conrad Blucher Institute and the Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network (TCOON) a state-of-the-art electronic water monitoring network that provides local state and federal agencies as well as coastal managers and the general public with real-time data information on water levels and other environmental parameters along the Texas coast. The TCOON consists of 30 data collection stations along the Texas coast with the CBI maintaining an additional 50 stations collecting a broad spectrum of environmental data in support of specific projects and programs. Data collection stations measure environmental and physical parameters such as water level wind temperature barometric pressure water current velocity and water quality parameters at some locations.

Ellicott has created a new display for this year’s WEDA conference. It includes four separate banner panels featuring nostalgic photos from the company’s history ongoing projects interesting applications and parts/service. Paul Quinn vice president; Marty Barnes COO; Steve Miller domestic sales manger and Jack Fiddes of the customer service department will be in the booth. Chief Engineer John Denuto will present a paper on a new 26-inch dredge Ellicott designed.

New Editor Anna Townshend attending her first WEDA annual meeting will greet visitors in the booth tour the exhibit floor and attend technical sessions. In the booth will be the current and back issues of IDR plus literature for other publications of parent company Waterways Journal Inc.
Ryzhka International LLC #211
Michael Dunbar will represent Ryzhka International LLC a new fuel oil and lubricant provider in bulk and package quantities to government commercial and maritime industries. It can provide products from most major petroleum refineries as well as products from smaller refineries or OEM products. At the end of the year the EPA will enact new regulations for vessel lubricants and Dunbar can provide information outlining the new regulations and new products lines that meet more environmentally sensitive standards.
