DREDGING HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST
35 YEARS AGO – 1977
The Port of Busan South Korea planned a $112 million project to extend its container wharf by 700 meters which would require dredging the berths to 12.5 meters plus rehabilitation of two existing piers and two wharves.
The National Wetland Inventory was launched to identify wetlands in the U.S. its territories and possessions. President Jimmy Carter told Congress that the total wetlands in the U.S. had been reduced 40 percent since the 1950s and were being lost at the rate of 300000 acres per year.
30 YEARS AGO – 1982
The Texas A&M 15th Dredging Seminar was held for the first time in conjunction with the Western Dredging Association fourth annual meeting WEDA IV at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans. Co-sponsors were the Society of American Military Engineers and the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses (PIANC). During the event the group formed a parade that included a Cajun band and necklaces to throw to onlookers on their way to the river for a cruise on the steamboat Natchez.
20 YEARS AGO – 1992
Electronic Power Design (EPD) began marketing a non-nuclear non-intrusive production metering system. John Janik was the principal designer of the system aided by engineer Bob Canup. It was installed on the dredge Allan Judith mining calcium carbonate in Ocean Key Bahamas.
Manson Construction & Engineering Co. of Seattle purchased the hydraulic dredging division of Reidel International Portland Oregon.
10 YEARS AGO – 2002
Paul Quinn former vice president of Mobile Pulley & Machine Works joined Baltimore Dredges as Director of Sales.
Dredge engineer Robert Jantzen died at the age of 68. He was widely known in the international dredging industry for his dredge designs and for his work on dredge retrofit and repair especially power train and gearbox installation.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) received an order from the Suez Canal Authority in Egypt for a 10000-cubic-meter hopper dredge. VOSTA LMG was contracted to provide engineering support dredging components and an automation system for the dredge which would be complete in 2004.
