The Council for Dredging & Marine Construction Safety Is Working for Safe Workplaces

The Council for Dredging & Marine Construction Safety (CDMCS) is a government/industry partnership to promote safety. The group establishes processes for resolving safety issues and provides lessons learned from all industry.

The group replaces the Dredging Safety Management program (DSMP). Activities include creating and identifying safety training resources for marine construction and fosters the development of safety management systems that result in an industry-driven safety culture.

The steering committee consists of representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Associated General Contractors Dredging Contractors of America Local 25 of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) the National Maritime Union (NMU) the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (MEBA) and the International Organization of Masters Mates & Pilots (IOMM&P).

Members are:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with approximately 34000 civilians and soldiers delivering engineering services to customers in more than 90 countries. The Corps mission is to provide public engineering services in peace and war.
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) a full-service national trade association with a nationwide network of chapters representing more than 32000 leading firms in the industry – including general contractors specialty contractors and service providers and suppliers. Dredging companies form a vital segment of this membership.
The Dredging Contractors of America (DCA) a non-profit trade association that has represented the interests of the U.S. dredging industry and its members for more than 26 years. Membership includes 10 large dredging companies 16 small companies and five associate members that operate on the Atlantic Gulf and Pacific coasts the Great Lakes the inland rivers and in Hawaii and Alaska.

The Association of Diving Contractors International Inc. founded in 1968 by a small group of diving companies. Their goal was to create a non-profit organization that would cultivate and promote commercial diving establish uniform safe standards for commercial divers and encourage industry-wide observance of these standards.

The Dutra Group four integrated companies providing dredging marine construction and materials engaged in all aspects of land and marine construction.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company LLC established in 1890 the largest dredging contractor in the U.S. with a fleet of 27 dredges 43 material transport barges two drillboats seven booster pumps and 185 specialized support vessels. Active in the domestic and international markets Great Lakes engages in land reclamation maintenance and deepening of navigation channels and ports creating and maintaining beaches and constructing shore protection systems; excavating harbors and building docks terminals and piers; restoring aquatic and wetland habitats; and excavating underwater pipeline cable and tunnel trenches.

Local 25 of The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) is a progressive trade union representing a diverse workforce of operating engineers mainly in the construction industry. As a member of the IUOE Local 25 represents its members through the collective bargaining process to ensure fair wages benefits healthcare and safe working conditions. As the only IUOE marine local on the east coast of the United States the union represents the workforce from Maine to Florida.

Manson Construction Company is an over-100-year-old family-owned and operated marine construction company that ranks as the third largest marine and port facilities contractor in the nation (ENR Sept. 2008). Manson specializes in design/build bridge construction bridge repair and retrofit work dredging of ports and waterways land reclamation through beach re-nourishment and levee construction and the construction of wharves piers terminals docks and outfalls. The fleet of heavy-duty dredges derricks and barges is managed from five locations on three North American coasts.

Massachusetts Pile Drivers Local 56 represents five hundred journeymen and apprentices employed as piledrivers welders burners fitters and commercial divers. The scope of work performed by the members includes driven pile foundations support of excavation construction of slurry walls cofferdams bridges piers docks wharfs all aspects of commercial diving including installation of offshore Liquid Natural Gas (L.N.G.) docking facilities and operation of submersible robotic vehicles.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) manages Navy construction including dredging to the Navy Expeditionary Combat Enterprise all other warfare and provider enterprises the Marine Corps Unified Commanders and DoD Agencies.

Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Company is a diversified dredging aggregate and marine construction company founded in 1913 in Pine Bluff Arkansas. Operations span the Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast regions. They are a regular contractor with the Corps of Engineers for Mississippi River maintenance dredging projects. Other specialties consist of crushed stone and marine construction barge transportation bank stabilization rock structures levees and marsh creation restoration and protection as well as ready-mix concrete sand dredging and hot-mix asphalt. The company’s marine operations are vertically integrated providing turn-key projects using their quarry transportation construction and dredging divisions.

SeaBright Insurance Company provides workers’ compensation coverage to employers in selected regions of the U.S. SeaBright’s maritime alternative dispute resolution and state act products are available through selected independent insurance brokers and through its in-house wholesale broker affiliate PointSure Insurance Services.
