Rotterdam Project Achieves 3.8 Million Cubic Meters in One Week

In April the construction consortium PUMA moved and placed 3.8 million cubic meters of sand in one week during the Maasvlakte 2 land reclamation project in the North Sea. Eleven Boskalis and Van Oord hopper dredges are working on the project.

The Maasvlakte 2 reclamation will add 2000 hectares (4942 acres) to the Port of Rotterdam.

On Sunday April 25 the 120 millionth cubic meter of sand was sprayed onto the reclamation area – meaning that half the sand needed for the first phase of Maasvlakte 2 has been applied. The first container terminals are due to be ready for operation in 2013 so the project is on schedule.

The contract is worth about 1 billion euros ($1.44 billion).
